Rebuild It & They Will Play

Ghost Players

Devastating thunderstorms hit in late July 2011 dumping upwards of 15 inches of rain in a day causing flooding in the Tri-state area. The fields at the Dubuque Sports Complex (the home of the Dubuque Boys Independent League and other recreational baseball, softball and football teams and families) were destroyed. Dan Kennedy, a fellow Ghost Player, is the manager of the complex. Many of us have put in many a long day playing at those fields for fun, fundraisers, and to help our local players become skilled. Please spread the word, and bring your friends to this fundraiser to help the community.

The storm damaged the area but we want to rebuild this place that is presently only memories. Many hours of work and dedication are needed to restore the fields for play by spring of 2012. The damage is extensive and the cost to repair the storm-struck fields, buildings, fences, parking lots, and machinery will be enormous. Estimates to repair the complex total over $599,000.

Friends of Baseball have organized to "Rebuild It So the KIDS Can Play!"

Mission Statement
The sole mission of the Friends of Baseball is to provide financial assistance required to repair the five ball fields at the Dubuque Sports Complex that were damaged from the excessive rainfall this past July. Our desire is to provide a safe, enjoyable and an engaging family environment for children to play and truly benefit from the sportsmanship and teamwork gained from organized baseball. It is our conviction that if we offer our children a place to play, we grant them the chance to be kids and help keep their parents off the streets.

All funds raised will directly pay invoices such as fencing and parking lot replacement, totaling over $599,000.

Ghost Player Endowment

Are you looking for a worthy cause to support to this year? Please consider the Ghost Player Preservation Archive Project. We are at a point in the Ghost Player project’s development that we are nearly complete on the work in securing a permanent home for the Ghost Player video archive that will be accessible by the public. As part of this process, we are looking for ways to make sure that the archive becomes publicly accessible and that the data is store in such a way that it will be maintainable and sustainable going forward. In order to do that it will take funding for an endowment to protect the archive. The Dyersville Area Community Foundation will manage these funds and is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque.

Making an endowment gift through the DACF is a tax-savvy way to support the preservation of baseball history and the Field of Dreams Ghost Players. If you have questions concerning the endowment and/or how to make a gift, please contact DACF Executive Director Nancy Dunkel at 563-599-7094 or by email at Make a gift through Dyersville Area Community Foundation (DACF):

Rima’s Radio Reminiscing

Ghost Players

Dennis Rima Learning the Snake Dance during Japan Tour (as shown in the movie, Ghost Player: Relive the Magic.

In November, the Ghost Players were featured on a two-hour radio talk show, "Cubanarama". It was hosted by Marta Sosa and her guest was Ghost Player, Coach Dennis Rima. The Ghost Players had been invited to be part of the talk show because of the positive response of the people who saw the documentary Ghost Player: Relive the Magic during the DocMiami International Film Festival. The show was a great way to showcase the talents of our Ghost Players and their international travels. Coach did an amazing job promoting Iowa, the GP movie, and the Field of Dreams to an international audience.
