United Nations Ambassador Meets Ghosts
The Ghost Players Marv Maiers, Frank Dardis, and Hank Lucas played movie guides as well as catch with the guests. Young men from the American Legion Baseball Leagure also played ball with the visitors.
Every so often, a visitor comes to town and the Ghosts get to play tour guides. In early May, the Honarble Warren W Tichenor came to visit the Field of Dreams. It was a special trip for the former ambassador and his son. The ambassador and Warren II are huge movie buffs; they came to see the sites where the movie was shot and hear the stories about the filming from locals who had been involved in creating it.
Ghost Player’s documentarian Joe Scherrman played tour guide for the rest of their visit.
They explored filming locations in Dyersville, Dubuque, and Galena thanks to Scherrman’s DreamCatcher connections. They even stopped in to see the Skyline Motel when they were near the Dubuque Airport. The motel has been a shooting location for the Field of Dreams. More recently the motel was used in the film, Black Web, which is a film created by the team at DreamCatcher Productions.
While in Dubuque and Galena the guided tours were conducted on Trikes’ supplied by Leo Broughton, who owns Tour Dubuque and Tour De Galena.
This is a coin from the ambassador.
Jens Sogaard was able to demonstrate his woodworking skills and the ambassador toured his shop, Spark Creative Technologies, located in the old Left and Center building at the Field of Dreams movie site. European history and politics were talked about over the wood chips and white pine.
While in the area they stayed at a hotel in Dyersville so they could be as near the FoD as possible and really enjoyed their stay. They marveled at how excellent the steak dinner was at the Golfside Grill, saying had they been in a bigger city the meal would have cost them $75. When a Texan is impressed with the quality of a steak, you know it has to be good. While in the area they visited the Log Cabin Steakhouse in Galena.
They indulged in a tour and meal at Breitbach’s Country Dinning. Mike Breitbach and family were featured in the movie Spinning Plates.
It is a good thing the Beckman High School track was available to run on while they were in town.
The Ghosts had a great time with the guests. Joe was wowed by getting a tour of the Ambassdor’s plane.
